Inspired by music at St Patrick’s Cathedral? Why not join us? Details of how to get involved in the many different opportunities are outlined below.
The Cathedral Choir sings throughout the year during school term, and at Christmas and Easter celebrations, ordinations, concerts and other special occasions.
Choir scholarships from Years 5 to 12 are offered by the Archdiocese of Melbourne in conjunction with St Kevin’s College, Toorak. To be eligible, boys must be Catholic and able to enrol in Year 5 at St Kevin’s College. Auditions are held in May each year for entry the following year. Find out more here.
The Cathedral Singers are a mixed adult choir and sing at Sunday evening Mass each week, except during January. Auditions to join the choir are conducted by the choir director, Christopher Mason. Please direct any enquiries to the Cathedral music department.
Cantors sing at various weekend Masses and at mid-week Solemnity Masses. Cathedral cantors are professional musicians, able to encourage and lead congregational participation, with a high standard of music sight-reading and experience. To enquire about becoming a cantor please contact the Cathedral music department.
From time to time, we are able to offer experience and/or tuition to suitable organ or cantor students who wish to develop their potential as liturgical musicians. For example, you may be working in your local parish but wish to develop or extend your experience or skill base. While these opportunities through educational outreach are limited, we would be happy to hear from you if you think you may be a suitable candidate. To enquire about participating in educational outreach, please contact the Cathedral music department.
If you are currently working as a parish musician, whether you have done so for a long time or you have recently joined a parish music team, we can advise you on programs that may assist you on your journey. Additionally, certificates and awards from the Royal School of Church Music and the Guild of Church Musicians are a way for your contributions to Church music to be recognised and acknowledged through completion of appropriate syllabuses. Please contact the Cathedral music department with any enquiries about Church music certificates and diplomas.
