About the opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Parish Financial Services Manager plays a critical role in providing financial guidance, support, and oversight to parishes within the Archdiocese of Melbourne. This role emphasises collaboration, transparency and alignment with the mission and values of the Catholic Church.

This full-time, permanent position offers a hybrid work model (3 days per week in the office and you choose work-from-home or in-office for the balance), career development and the support of a dedicated team, including two direct reports.

Key Responsibilities of the role

  • Offer expert financial advice and guidance to parish priests, administrators, and finance committees on budgeting, cash flow management, financial planning and reporting.
  • Assist parishes in preparing and managing annual budgets and financial forecasts; monitor financial performance, identify risks, and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
  • Support parishes in developing financial strategies that align with their pastoral mission and long-term sustainability.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with parish leadership teams, fostering trust and open communication.
  • Ensure alignment with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, Archdiocesan Office financial policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and training sessions with parish staff and finance committees to enhance financial literacy and capacity.
  • Provide guidance to improve financial governance.
  • Support parishes in managing day-to-day financial operations, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and banking relationships.
  • Assist with the implementation of financial management systems and tools to streamline parish operations.

About you

You will be CA or CPA qualified, a hands-on Financial Controller/Finance Manager, with strong leadership experience in a continuous improvement environment and looking to make this role your own.

What will ensure your success:

  • Relevant qualifications in accounting, plus CA/CPA.
  • 5+ years’ experience in financial management, preferably in a non-profit, faith-based, or parish environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including use of finance systems and Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills.
  • High level of attention to detail, quality and accuracy. This includes strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide practical and context-specific solutions.
  • Ability to build strong, positive relationships, fostering a spirit of partnership and mutual support.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate financial discussions with empathy, respect, and understanding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
