As part of the Archdiocese of Melbourne’s commitment to the safety, wellbeing and human dignity of children, young people and adults, the Professional Standards Unit has recently launched its Safeguarding Essentials online training module.

Safeguarding Essentials is a 30-minute online training module for all volunteers within the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne. This accessible and engaging resource provides volunteers with foundational knowledge in relation to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable persons from abuse and harm.

The importance of training volunteers has been articulated in the Victorian Child Safe Standards, National Catholic Safeguarding Standards and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, on which the Archdiocese’s Safeguarding and Wellbeing Policy for Children and Young People is based.

All Church volunteers will be required to undertake this training annually, and this module makes it easier to comply with this requirement by allowing individuals and groups to complete this training online. For instance, individuals can complete the training in their own homes at a time convenient to them, or parishes might wish to organise assisted group sessions to support volunteers without access to a computer and those who do not feel confident using technology.
