Organised by St Patrick's Cathedral, this Friday night concert features organist Jennifer Chou and Trumpeter Bruno Siketa who will be playing the cycle Okna (Windows) (1976) by Czech composer Petr Eben (1929-2008.
The cycle Okna (Windows) (1976) for trumpet and organ was inspired by the dramatic stained glass windows
by Marc Chagall in the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. Chagall took his imagery from biblical
descriptions of the 12 sons of Jacob, and Jacob's blessings of them in Genesis 49, using colours and
symbolism to reflect the characteristics ascribed to the 12 tribes. Eben first saw them in pictures. Four
windows were chosen by Eben as the descriptive basis of this large scale, exciting and beautiful pictorial work
for trumpet and organ. Only some years after he composed this cycle had he got the opportunity to actually
visit the place to view the actual windows with his own eyes.
