Internationally renowned Australian organ virtuoso Thomas Heywood returns to St Patrick’s Cathedral to open the 2024 Concert Series.
In a thrilling program where ‘Beethoven meets the Dubois centenary’, Heywood plays his transcriptions of two famous Beethoven orchestral overtures to Egmont and Coriolan, as well as the rousing last movement of the Symphony No. 5. The Dubois treats include the composer’s Toccata and well-known Grand Choeur. There is also a rarely heard Sortie from 1921—a terrific work with plenty of light and shade.
Thomas Heywood enjoys an outstanding reputation as one of the world’s best concert organists. He has travelled over 1.2 million kilometres performing solo concerts on the most celebrated pipe organs across the globe and has an ever-growing repertoire of over 5,000 works. He performs regular international solo tours in concert halls, town halls, cathedrals and churches throughout the United Kingdom, North America and Europe. He is also a talented and prolific transcriber, publishing solo concert organ arrangements of some the most famous music composed over the last 300 years.
‘The most compelling music making of any kind I’ve heard in ages.’
—The Dallas Morning News, USA
‘His technique is impeccable and seemingly limitless. His command of musical style, particularly in large Romantic works, allows him to make them spring to life in the organ’s unique idiom.’
—The American Organist, March 2019
