Art that connects and illuminates

Art and culture have a special role to play in the Church, pointing us to the abundant life that God intends for each one of us. The many creative ways we find to express our human experience and our sense of wonder—in music, art, dance, food, language—can simultaneously connect us to God and to each other.

In this week’s stories, New Zealand artist Damien Walker recently crossed the Tasman to bring a new statue of St Clare to St Clare’s Church in Box Hill North. While he was there, he shared some of what he has learnt about sacred art’s ability to act as a bridge to the Divine.

Young people from Melbourne's migrant communities are busy planning a new Migrant Youth Festival to take place on Migrant and Refugee Sunday—an opportunity to connect with each other and to share and celebrate the rich cultural and spiritual gifts that their communities bring to the broader Church.

And writer Christian Bergmann explores what it means (and does not mean) to be a Catholic artist, discovering a ‘more spacious’ understanding of the role of art in the life of faith.

A bridge to the Divine: a new symbol of faith arrives in Box Hill North
For the first time in its 65-year history, the church of Box Hill North has a statue of its patroness, St Clare. The work, blessed at Mass on the feast of St Clare by Bishop Les Tomlinson, was created by New Zealand artist Damien Walker, who spoke to us about the statue’s strong ‘Melbourne connection’ and the ways the rich symbolism of sacred art can act as a ‘bridge to the Divine’.
How (not) to be a Catholic artist
‘To be an artist is human. It is baked into our humanity, part of our vocation of being “co-creators” with God, and we exercise this calling in a variety of ways,’ Christian Bergmann writes as he grapples with the question of how (or how not) to be a Catholic artist and considers a ‘more spacious’ understanding of what ‘art’ might mean for a person of faith.
Migrant Youth Festival to share and celebrate the diverse gifts of our migrant communities
On Sunday 29 September, Melbourne’s Migrant Catholic Chaplaincies will host the first Migrant Youth Festival, a youth-led event designed to share and celebrate the gifts of young people from the diverse migrant communities of the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Organised to mark the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, the festival aims to bring together young people from across the Archdiocese for a day filled with music, culture, prayer and friendship.

In the lead-up to Social Justice Sunday this weekend, Australia’s Catholic bishops have released their Social Justice Statement for 2024–25. Caritas Australia condemns historic humanitarian death toll
In 2023, 280 aid workers were killed globally, twice as many as any other year in the past decade. So far this year, 170 humanitarians have been killed. Damian Spruce, Advocacy Associate Director at Caritas Australia, says, ‘From day one of any conflict—whether it be in Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza or anywhere else in the world—civilians, humanitarians and medical workers should be protected. This is something we agreed upon as a global, human family, as we enshrined it in international law.’

Heeding our baptismal call: Prof Myriam Wijlens on the gifts and challenges of a synodal Church
When Prof Myriam Wijlens—theologian, canonist, ecumenist, consultant to several Vatican bodies and expert in safeguarding—came to Newman College on 14 August to give the Helder Camara Lecture, most of the faithful who packed the Oratory anticipated an evening of insight and wisdom on her chosen topic: ‘The prophetic voice of the laity in the renewal of the Catholic Church’. They were not disappointed.
‘Sacred art is a great means to bridge the gap to the Divine. Even with different ethnic communities, you can speak the same language through sacred art. You may not all speak the same language, but you can all have the same mission.’
