Bread of life

There are many things that help to sustain us in the life of faith: the beauty and comfort we might find in music, art and literature, for instance; the company and kindness of friends and family, or the stories of faith and courage that inspire and form us. As we give thanks for these gifts, we remember that the greatest gift of all, and our truest sustenance, is Jesus Christ, the bread of life.

In this week’s stories, we visit JPII House in Carlton, a home away from home for Catholic students in Melbourne, and a place where those who are new to the faith or just curious about it find a warm welcome and enduring friendships.

As Australia’s Olympic athletes begin to make their way home from Paris, we remember Melbourne’s own ‘Olympic moment’ in 1956, and the Olympic Mass that drew 70,000 people to Como Park.

And we look forward to ACU’s upcoming ‘Big Sing for a Big Cause’ concert at St Patrick’s Cathedral, where a 10th-anniversary performance of the acclaimed choral work Street Requiem will bring attention to the plight of the homeless and honour those who have died on our streets.

Students ‘welcomed home’ to JPII House, a place of hospitality and encounter
JPII House is ‘the sacramental heart’ of the student community in Melbourne, a place of hospitality and encounter, where Catholic students, those new to the faith and those who are just curious are always welcome. Zaya, an RMIT student and part of the JPII House community, believes that the kind of everyday accompaniment offered at the house is the way to bring people along. ‘We invite, we show them, we plant seeds,' he says. For Melbourne University student Aika, the house has been 'this oasis of love and peace’ and just ‘what I needed'.
‘Something to be proud of’: remembering Melbourne’s 1956 Olympic Mass
With the Paris Olympics concluding over the weekend, we take a look at Melbourne’s own ‘Olympic moment’ in 1956, and at the special ‘Olympic Mass’ that was held at Como Park on the first Sunday of the Games, drawing 70,000 people. Fr Brian Cosgriff—a second-year seminarian at Corpus Christi College in Werribee at the time—remembers being bussed across to Como Park with other seminarians to attend the Mass. It was a day that has stayed in his memory. ‘You had a kind of an appreciation of the effect that the Catholic Church had,’ he says of an event that Archbishop Daniel Mannix would later describe as ‘something to be proud of’.
For those who died on our streets: ACU’s ‘Big Sing for a Big Cause’ comes to the Cathedral
On Sunday 25 August, the stirring sounds of a massed choir and orchestra will reverberate through St Patrick’s Cathedral, honouring those who have died on our streets. As part of a new community music project sponsored by Australian Catholic University, the ‘Big Sing for a Big Cause’ concert will raise funds for people struggling to find secure accommodation. It will also include a 10th-anniversary performance of the acclaimed choral work Street Requiem by Melbourne-based composers Dr Kathleen McGuire, Andy Payne and Jonathan Welch.
Edith Stein’s three beings
As a philosopher, 20th-century saint Edith Stein lectured and wrote on many topics, while as Sr Benedicta of the Cross, she humbly taught primary school religious education. During her life, the Nazi war machine was building, leading to the murder of millions of Jews, including Stein herself on 9 August 1942 at Auschwitz. Against the background of her remarkable life, Joe Doolan reflects on her idea that we experience 'three beings' in life: the fleeting, the enduring and, ultimately, the eternal being of God.
Archbishop calls for existing protections to remain as PM abandons religious discrimination bill
At a recent media conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese seemed to confirm widespread speculation that the government has abandoned attempts to pass religious discrimination legislation during this term of parliament. Archbishop Peter A Comensoli said that while it was regrettable that ‘such important legislation’ was not proceeding, he trusts ‘that the Prime Minister will be true to his word that protections for people of faith will not go backwards under his leadership’.
Stop and read: Pope praises spiritual value of literature and poetry
Every Christian, but especially seminarians, should set aside their screens regularly and spend time with a book of literature or poetry, Pope Francis said in a recent letter ‘On the Role of Literature in Formation’. Literature, he said, helps us to weather life's storms. It also teaches us to listen to other voices, ‘to discern and explore the reality of individuals and situations as a mystery charged with a surplus of meaning’.
‘Literature teaches us how to look and see, to discern and explore the reality of individuals and situations as a mystery charged with a surplus of meaning.’
