Witnesses to Christ

As the Body of Christ, we are called to proclaim and embody the love and hope of Jesus in every encounter, in our families and neighbourhoods, in our workplaces and schools, even in our city streets.

On Sunday, almost 4,000 people—a record number—took to the streets of the CBD for the annual Corpus Christi Procession. As the procession slowly, reverently, joyfully wound its way from St Patrick’s Cathedral to Federation Square, onlookers got a glimpse of the hope and peace to be found in Christ.

Gearing up for the Jubilee of Priests and Jubilee of Bishops later this week, we delight in the news that Melburnian Deacon John Vespa will be the only Australian among 30 men being ordained to the priesthood by Pope Leo XIV this Friday as part of the Jubilee celebrations in Rome. We also celebrate the news that two Victorian bishops will soon be archbishops, with Melbourne Auxiliary Bishop Tony Ireland being appointed as the new Archbishop of Hobart, and Bishop Shane Mackinlay of Sandhurst soon to take up the role of Archbishop of Brisbane.

And as the Church’s celebration of the Jubilee of Seminarians continues today, we hear from second-year Melbourne seminarian Rohan Prince about what it means to ‘live the dream’ of pursuing his priestly vocation.

Love, urgency and longing: thousands gather for Corpus Christi
Record crowds gathered on a glorious winter’s day in Melbourne for the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus (Corpus Christi), with almost 4,000 coming together across the day for the annual Mass and Eucharistic procession.
Deacon John Vespa to be ordained by Pope Leo XIV
On Friday 27 June, the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Deacon John Vespa of the Archdiocese of Melbourne will be ordained to the priesthood by Pope Leo XIV. He will be representing Australia as one of about 30 seminarians from around the world to be ordained by the Pope during this Year of Jubilee.
‘Living the dream’: Rohan Prince on the joy of pursuing his priestly vocation
From his childhood in the outer Melbourne suburb of Lynbrook to the quiet rhythms of seminary life at Corpus Christi College, second-year seminarian Rohan Prince has always carried within him the hope of one day becoming a priest. Today, he says—by the grace of God and with the support and prayers of many faithful people—he is ‘living the dream’.
Pope appoints Bishop Anthony Ireland as new Archbishop of Hobart
On the evening of Friday 20 June, the People of God in Melbourne received the news that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Tony Ireland as the new Archbishop of Hobart. Currently an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, the Archbishop-elect welcomed the appointment ‘with a heart full of quiet joy’, saying he was ‘humbled and grateful for the trust placed in me to shepherd a diocese’.
Pope Leo appoints new Archbishop of Brisbane
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has welcomed the appointment by Pope Leo XIV of the Most Reverend Shane Mackinlay as the seventh Archbishop of Brisbane. Bishop Mackinlay, who was born in Melbourne, raised in Ballarat and currently serves as Bishop of Sandhurst, said he was ‘deeply honoured by Pope Leo’s decision’.
Better Together
Trishna and Moira Kelly
Moira Kelly and her adopted daughter Trishna have a beautiful bond, strengthened by their mutual love of Trishna’s twin sister, Krishna. The twins were born conjoined at the head, and Moira brought them to Australia for a rare and precarious operation to separate them. Trishna will graduate high school this year and hopes to work in disability services, inspired by her sister and her mum.

Vinnies volunteers recognised for providing dignity to those in need
Longtime Vinnies volunteers John and Maria Dowling never expected a medal. But their work was recognised at this year’s King’s Birthday honours, each receiving an OAM. They accepted on behalf of the St Vincent de Paul Society, who are hoping for more volunteers to help them deal with sky-rocketing calls for help.
Tonka trucks and trusting God: on what we teach our kids
At some point in the 1990s, a few Tonka trucks appeared in the sandpit of a local Sandringham playground. For about 30 years, they have remained in the sandpit for generations of kids to enjoy. Lucy Davison reflects on this small, everyday miracle, and on the lessons we teach our children about where to put our trust.

‘In this Jubilee of Hope, we do not process with pride but with love, urgency and longing. We walk through the city not to impose but to propose: that Jesus is here; that love is real; that hope has a name.’
Bishop Tony Ireland
