Many gifts, one Spirit

St Paul reminds us that within the community of God, there are many gifts but one Spirit who gives and directs them (1 Corinthians 12:4–11). Each of us is called to use our unique gifts in the service of God and neighbour, but not always in ways we might expect.

In this week’s stories, Michael McGirr reviews a new book about a small group of religious women who find themselves using their gifts in unexpected ways as they venture into a post–Vatican II world. The story of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament is, he writes, ‘an unconventional love story’ with ‘a deepening understanding of the Eucharist’ at its heart.

As we approach the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola at the end of the month, we share the story of Melbourne-based priest Fr Mariusz Han SJ, whose love of games—dating back to his Polish childhood—inspired him to create the award-winning board game Ignatius Loyola: Knight and Pilgrim, helping to bring the story and spirituality of St Ignatius to life for families, schools and parishes everywhere.

In the lead-up to Sea Sunday—which we observe over the next two weeks—we take a look at the striking new mural that recently appeared on the facade of the Stella Maris Seafarers’ Centre in West Melbourne. Painted by New York–based mural artist Damien Mitchell, it powerfully conveys the charity’s commitment to serving and supporting those who endure months of challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions at sea to keep our economy moving.

Board game brings St Ignatius’ story to life for a new generation
Playing board games is an ancient and noble tradition, not to mention a lot of fun. A new board game is even helping to connect people with the life and spirituality of St Ignatius of Loyola. Fr Mariusz Han is a Polish Jesuit priest based in Melbourne, and in 2023 he released the second board game he has created for commercial release: the award-winning Ignatius Loyola: Knight and Pilgrim. We spoke to him about his lifelong love of games, and about how this unique project came about.
Unconventional Women: a book review
Michael McGirr reviews a new book about ‘an unconventional love story, told with warmth and wisdom’. It is a book, he writes, that ‘draws close to a small group of women who, in the 1950s and 60s, followed a call to join the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, an enclosed order that began in France but that established a community in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale. Sarah Gilbert worked hard to gain their trust and tells their story with a rare kind of intimacy. The result is a book that has much for the entire Catholic community to ponder.’
Painting with purpose: new mural brings Stella Maris’ mission to life
A Catholic charity in the centre of Melbourne is bringing its mission to the streets with a striking mural depicting the perils of life at sea. The work, painted by Australian based mural artist David Mitchell, now decorates the facade of the iconic Stella Maris Seafarers’ Centre, bringing to life the charity’s commitment to providing pastoral care, services and support for seafaring people.

The bishops also praised the coach, Luis de la Fuente, for his testimony as a practising Catholic who has not shied away from his faith throughout the tournament or in daily life.
Pope prayer video: Anointing of the Sick offers strength to the seriously ill and elderly
The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not just for those who are nearing the end of their life, Pope Francis said. ‘Let us remember that the Anointing of the Sick is one of the “sacraments of healing”, of “restoration”, that heals the spirit,’ the Pope said in his prayer video message for July, released by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.
