Every moment

As we join people around the world in praying for Pope Francis this week, we remember that Jesus calls us to trust every part of our lives to him, the most ordinary moments as well as the extraordinary times of great joy or intense struggle. It’s a call the Holy Father continues to model and remind us of, even from his hospital bed.

Last week, we celebrated the Jubilee of Deacons, men who devote all of their ‘ordinary’ lives to an extraordinary ministry in service of the Gospel. We hear from two of our local permanent deacons about the unique joys and challenges of their vocation, and their mission to ‘let people know that God is very close to us’.

As we continue our journey as ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ this Jubilee Year, we visit St Mary MacKillop Church in Keilor Downs, another of the Archdiocese’s official Pilgrim Places, and hear how much this beautiful church owes to the grace of God and the intercession of the saints.

And as part of our ‘Hope does not disappoint’ series, Dr Robyn Miller AM—who was recognised last month in the Australia Day honours—shares how her Catholic upbringing has inspired and sustained her work with shattered families and others on the margins.

Let us continue to pray for Pope Francis, that God will be with him in every moment, bringing him healing, strength and courage.

A ministry of service: permanent deacons celebrate their Jubilee
This year, Pope Francis declared 21 February as the Jubilee of Deacons. In Rome and across the world—including here in Melbourne—Catholics came together to celebrate these men who have answered God’s call to the permanent diaconate. We hear from two local deacons about how the permanent diaconate offers a connection between the life within the Church and the world outside, modelling how these spheres of life and faith can fit together.
Pilgrim Places
St Mary MacKillop Church: the Pilgrim Place built by the grace of the saints
Pilgrims are already flocking to St Mary McKillop Church in Keilor Downs, one of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne’s Pilgrim Places for Jubilee 2025. The airy, bright church is a great place to commune with Australia’s first saint, after whom the church was named. But pilgrims also have an opportunity to pray for guidance from several other saints whose relics are housed there, including St Anthony of Pauda, St Therese of Lisieux and St John Paul II.
Hope does not disappoint
How Robyn Miller’s Catholic upbringing inspires her work with shattered families
Dr Robyn Miller was recently made a Member of the Order of Australia for her 40 years of service to children and families. She credits her upbringing in the Catholic faith for her unwavering commitment to improving child protection and helping damaged families. The CEO of MacKillop Family Services says the Catholic values of her early education and family home instilled in her a ‘deep sense of the innate worth of every single child and every single human being’—a conviction that continues to inform every part of her work.
‘Thank you for the prayers of comfort’: Pope Francis sends Angelus message from hospital bed
Pope Francis, who has been hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since 14 February and has been diagnosed with double pneumonia, ‘shows slight improvement’, although his clinical condition remains ‘critical’, according to a bulletin issued on 24 February. In a message released by the Vatican for the midday recitation of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, the 88-year-old Pope said, ‘I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy!’ He expressed his gratitude for the ‘many messages of affection’ he had received, ‘and for the prayers of comfort I have received from all over the world’.
Blessed Carlo Acutis gains more fans as relic and Eucharistic Miracles Exhibition arrive in Melbourne
Last week, St Thomas More Parish in Mount Eliza hosted a remarkable week-long parish mission, welcoming a first-class relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis alongside his renowned International Eucharistic Miracles Exhibition. This event marked the first time both the relic and exhibition had been displayed in Melbourne, drawing parishioners and visitors alike into a deeper reflection on the mystery of the Eucharist.

Celebrating every journey: World Care Day 2025
On 21 February, MacKillop Family Services joined the global celebration of World Care Day, an important opportunity to recognise the experiences and achievements of children and young people who have grown up in foster or residential care. This year’s theme, ‘Celebrating Every Journey’, highlighted—through storytelling and art—the unique experiences of children in care and the role of safe, trusted adults in their lives.
Catholic agencies call for continued support as Ukraine marks three years in the shadow of war
Ukraine remains in the midst of Europe’s largest post–World War II humanitarian crisis as it marks three years since Russia’s invasion. Catholic humanitarian agencies, including Caritas and a range of Jesuit aid organisations, continue to play a crucial role in delivering aid and services to the more than 12 million people the UN says need humanitarian assistance.
Churches of Jerusalem raise their voices for the people of Gaza
The heads of Jerusalem’s churches have called the situation in Gaza ‘a profound humanitarian tragedy’ and urged Christians to extend their compassion to all those affected. ‘May the God of mercy strengthen the afflicted, soften the hearts of those who hold power and bring forth a peace that upholds justice, preserves human dignity and safeguards the presence of all people in the land to which they belong,’ the church leaders said in a recent statement, as Caritas Australia commits to continue its steadfast support of program partners in Gaza.
‘We want people to know that being a Christian is 24/7, and I think a deacon can help to show these spheres of life and faith can fit together. They can see us as ordinary people doing ordinary things, but we are also called to an extraordinary mission to evangelise, to let people know that God is with us, very close to us.’
