Love in action

On Saturday afternoon, current and former members of the Young Christian Workers (YCW) came together in Melbourne to celebrate a movement that for 100 years has demonstrated the remarkable power of small acts of love carried out in the midst of ordinary lives.

As we mark Reconciliation Week, we speak to Aboriginal elder Maureen Moore, a woman whose quiet, resilient faith and generous service epitomises love in action.

Diocesan leaders from around Australia gathered in Melbourne recently as preparations for the fifth Australian Catholic Youth Festival—the largest event on the Australian Catholic calendar—ramp up.

And as 10 years tick over since the publication of Pope Francis’ groundbreaking encyclical Laudato si’, we hear how parishes and communities in Melbourne continue to live out its call to care for our common home through everyday acts of love and hope.

See–judge–act: YCW celebrates 100 years of putting love into action
A hundred years after the Young Christian Workers movement was founded in Belgium, its transformative impact is still felt in lives and communities around the globe. On Saturday 24 May, past and present members of the YCW from Melbourne and around the country came together at All Saints Church in Fitzroy for a special Mass and reunion to celebrate the movement’s centenary, learn about the current work of the YCW, and reminisce and give thanks.
Looking back with love: Aboriginal elder Maureen Moore’s quiet, generous faith
Wurundjeri woman Maureen Moore is dedicated to her community and caring towards her friends. She was recognised for her service in last year’s NATSICC awards. It has not been an easy journey for the Stolen Generations survivor, but Maureen says she is at peace with herself.
Melbourne prepares to host Australia’s largest Catholic event this December
Preparations are ramping up as Melbourne prepares to welcome more than 10,000 young people later this year for the fifth Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF), the largest event on the Australian Catholic calendar. Taking place from 30 November to 2 December at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, this year’s festival marks a special homecoming, with the very first ACYF held in Melbourne back in 2013.
A decade on, Laudato si’ continues to inspire hope
Laudato si’, Pope Francis’ groundbreaking encyclical on the environment, was released 10 years ago and continues to inspire people around the world who are concerned about the future of ‘our common home’. Parishioners and community groups across Melbourne are among those doing what they can to live the principles of Laudato si’ and to face the future with hope.
Parishes urged to consider new ways of addressing domestic violence
Women experiencing domestic violence are in a bind: it’s not safe to stay in their homes; leaving makes them vulnerable to homelessness. Charities like McAuley Community Services for Women are trying new tactics to keep women safe, while advocating for more to be done at the parish level to help prevent violence in the first place.
Pilgrims of hope
Salesians of Don Bosco celebrate 150 years of mission
People connected to Melbourne’s Salesian congregation came together for a day of celebration on 24 May to mark 150 years since the congregation’s first missionary expedition, when a group of young Salesian priests left Italy for Argentina. It was also an opportunity for the Salesians of the Australia–Pacific Province to reflect together on their own mission for the Jubilee Year of Hope and beyond.
‘New life emerges’: introducing formation.org.au
A bold new initiative has emerged from within the Australian Church with the recent launch of formation.org.au, a professional membership network designed to create time and space for connection, collaboration and renewal among people shaping and leading formation for mission.
Communion requires prayer, listening, conversion, Pope says
During his homily at Mass at the Basilica of St John Lateran, where he took possession of the cathedral as the Bishop of Rome on 25 May, Pope Leo XIV said communion is built primarily ‘on our knees’, through prayer and a constant commitment to conversion.
‘I don’t do things for recognition. I do it because I love doing it. Greeting people in church and looking out for the kids at the back, I love doing it. I know nearly everybody, and if a new person comes in, I say, “Oh, welcome to our church. Take a seat and we’ll look after you.”’
