‘Learn from Mary’: Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon at WYD Opening Mass
On Tuesday, the 16th international World Youth Day officially began in Lisbon, Portugal, with nearly 400,000 young Catholics from around the world gathering to celebrate their faith. In his homily for the Opening Mass, Cardinal Manuel Clemente, Patriarch of Lisbon, encouraged those gathered to learn from Mary and treat life as a journey, carrying Jesus within them and bringing him to others.
‘Called to be true’: Emerging Leaders hear from Sr Nathalie Becquart and Archbishop Rino Fisichella
As part of their program of formation, participants on the Emerging Leaders pilgrimage sat down with prominent figures in the Church to hear their experiences in ministry and evangelisation. These included Archbishop Rino Fisichella (Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery of Evangelisation) and Sr Nathalie Becquart XMCJ (Undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops), who encouraged the pilgrims to witness to the faith and take the risk of listening to others.
Melbourne pilgrims arrive in Lisbon for Mass with Archbishop Comensoli
On Monday, Melbourne pilgrims travelling to the 16th international World Youth Day converged on Lisbon, Portugal, and celebrated Mass together with Archbishop Peter A Comensoli, the first time the nearly 600 pilgrims had been together since their commissioning Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral. In his homily, Archbishop Comensoli reminded the gathered pilgrims that ‘Grace is life; grace is our life. Grace—charis—is all we need to live.’
‘A beautiful experience’: Pilgrims celebrate Mass at St Peter’s Basilica and visit the catacombs
On the morning of Thursday 27 July, pilgrims from the Emerging Leaders program and The Italian Way gathered at St Peter’s Basilica, where Archbishop Peter A Comensoli celebrated Mass in one of the chapels, before the pilgrims visited the Roman catacombs. Archbishop Comensoli and a teacher from the School of the Good Shepherd shared their thoughts about these moving experiences.

Over the weekend, pilgrims on the Italian Way and Holy Land pre–World Youth Day pilgrimages arrived in Fatima, visiting the shrine commemorating Our Lady’s apparition to three young Portuguese children in the early 20th century. They also joined an evening candlelit procession through the main square, where some Melbourne pilgrims helped to carry the statue of Our Lady.
