God calls to us throughout our lives, gently encouraging us to follow and respond to him.
Every year on Good Shepherd Sunday, seminarians from Corpus Christi College visit parishes across the Archdiocese to tell their vocation stories. We share some of their unique stories of how they heard the call of the Good Shepherd.
As Archbishop Peter A Comensoli reminds us in his latest video message, Anzac Day—which we celebrate tomorrow—is an opportunity to remember and honour the lives lost and sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women. We share the story of one such servicewoman, Matron Irene Drummond, whose dedication, compassion and Catholic faith guided and sustained her, even as she made the ultimate sacrifice.
Also this week, guests at the first Melbourne Catholic Professionals (MCP) luncheon of the year heard from Greg Sheridan AO about his encouraging experience of ‘coming out’ as a public Christian. To help people enter into the Year of Prayer in 2024, some new local prayer resources and opportunities are on offer, including the return of the Fiat weekend of prayer. A new grassroots, Melbourne-based initiative—the Benedetto Creatives Collective—seeks to draw young creatives together to collaborate and network in their vocation as artists. And in the face of intensifying hostilities and dislocation, Caritas continues to deliver lifesaving humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
Finally, it was also on Good Shepherd Sunday in 1933 that St Edith Stein walked into a church, having long harboured a desire to become a Carmelite, to seek ‘the assurance of the Good Shepherd’. We take a look at her story and why it took 12 years for her to enter Carmel.
