Following God’s call

God calls to us throughout our lives, gently encouraging us to follow and respond to him.

Every year on Good Shepherd Sunday, seminarians from Corpus Christi College visit parishes across the Archdiocese to tell their vocation stories. We share some of their unique stories of how they heard the call of the Good Shepherd.

As Archbishop Peter A Comensoli reminds us in his latest video message, Anzac Day—which we celebrate tomorrow—is an opportunity to remember and honour the lives lost and sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women. We share the story of one such servicewoman, Matron Irene Drummond, whose dedication, compassion and Catholic faith guided and sustained her, even as she made the ultimate sacrifice.

Also this week, guests at the first Melbourne Catholic Professionals (MCP) luncheon of the year heard from Greg Sheridan AO about his encouraging experience of ‘coming out’ as a public Christian. To help people enter into the Year of Prayer in 2024, some new local prayer resources and opportunities are on offer, including the return of the Fiat weekend of prayer. A new grassroots, Melbourne-based initiative—the Benedetto Creatives Collective—seeks to draw young creatives together to collaborate and network in their vocation as artists. And in the face of intensifying hostilities and dislocation, Caritas continues to deliver lifesaving humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

Finally, it was also on Good Shepherd Sunday in 1933 that St Edith Stein walked into a church, having long harboured a desire to become a Carmelite, to seek ‘the assurance of the Good Shepherd’. We take a look at her story and why it took 12 years for her to enter Carmel.

Anzac Day is a time to remember and honour the lives lost and sacrifices made by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the First World War and subsequent conflicts. ‘Chin up girls’: Matron Irene Drummond and the nurses of the Vyner Brooke
Among the nursing sisters reluctant to leave Singapore and her patients in the final chaotic days before the city fell to the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces in 1942 was Irene Drummond, a dedicated and much-admired Australian army matron. As we prepare to celebrate Anzac Day, we share her story of faith, kindness and courage in the face of tragedy and trauma, along with the remarkable survival stories of some of the nurses who accompanied her on the last, fateful voyage of the Vyner Brooke.

‘The assurance of the Good Shepherd’: how Edith Stein finally received her vocation
On Good Shepherd Sunday 1933, Edith Stein, having long harboured a desire to become a Carmelite, walked into church and prayed, saying, ‘I’m not leaving here until I have a clear-cut assurance whether I may now enter Carmel.’ For 12 years she had avoided the deepest desire of her heart to become a Carmelite. But what happened in 1933? And why had the walls ‘crumbled’ to finally let her in? We explore the moving story of how St Edith Stein finally received her vocation.
