Learning to hope the hard way

Sometimes it’s the hardships and challenges we face that shape and strengthen us the most. In the most difficult times, we learn what it truly means to put our trust and our hope in God alone.

This week, as part of our ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ series, we hear Fr Stephen Battal’s remarkable story of hope and faith in the face of extraordinary danger and suffering, and of his eventful, grace-filled journey from South Sudan to Melbourne.

Modern slavery survivor Moe Turaga is another person who knows about the struggle to remain hopeful through difficult times. In our new ‘Hope does not disappoint’ series, he shares his story of finding freedom through the kindness of an attentive stranger, and urges Catholics not to turn a blind eye if they suspect someone is being exploited.

And today, on the feast of Our Lady or Lourdes and World Day of the Sick—a day when Pope Francis encourages us to be ‘angels of hope and messengers of God for one another’—we hear about the recent Lourdes Day Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, which each year brings the healing waters of Lourdes to those who are unable to travel there themselves.

Pilgrims of hope
Fr Stephen Battal, holding firm to faith and hope in suffering
Fr Stephen Battal is no stranger to suffering and challenges. From the time he was born in a refugee camp on the border of Sudan and the Central African Republic, through to his early childhood years and his time in the seminary and priesthood in Sudan, he has navigated civil war, assassination attempts and long journeys through the bush to hide or escape danger. Yet through it all, his faith in God has never wavered. Fr Stephen shares how seeing ‘God’s hand in everything, even the suffering’ has been a source of strength and hope in his life.
Hope does not disappoint
Moe Turaga: shining a light on modern slavery
In the first story in a new series for the Jubilee Year 2025, titled ‘Hope does not disappoint’, we speak with modern slavery survivor Moe Turaga, who urges Catholics not to turn a blind eye if they suspect someone is being exploited. The spokesman with the Australian Catholic Anti-Slavery Network (ACAN) knows from his own experience that the enquiries of a concerned friend or stranger can bring light and hope to those trapped in slavery.

‘Flowing peace’: waters of Lourdes reach St Patrick’s at annual Lourdes Day Mass
Last Saturday, hundreds of faithful from across Melbourne gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral for the Lourdes Day Mass—a cherished annual opportunity to pray for the sick and infirm. For those unable to visit the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, this Mass brings those facing health challenges closer to its grace, allowing them to receive the healing waters that flow from the sacred site.
From horseback priests to livestream Masses: St Brigid’s turns 150
A pretty church in the countryside on Melbourne’s outskirts is marking its sesquicentenary this year. Archbishop Peter A Comensoli celebrated the anniversary Mass on 9 February, reminding the hundreds of people who gathered for the occasion that ‘Here, in this location, and among the people of this region, God has been present and continues to call us.’
Croatian community honours Blessed Cardinal Aloysius Stepanac
The Croatian Catholic community of Melbourne and Geelong recently came together to celebrate the feast of Blessed Aloysius Stepinac, who was Archbishop of Zagreb during World War II and the subsequent Communist era. On the Saturday before his 10 February feast day, St Patrick’s Cathedral came alive with colour and music in honour of a man who, in the words of Bishop Anthony Ireland, ‘defended the rights of the oppressed and rejected all forms of tyranny and hatred’.
Project Compassion: take a long walk to transform lives
Project Compassion, Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraiser, is expanding, incorporating a new challenge, the Long Walk for Water. Caritas’ Community Fundraising Manager Leanne Langdon is proud of the new event, saying, ‘Many walking challenges aren’t very inclusive, focusing heavily on distances covered when not everyone has the time or the physical ability to do that. With the Long Walk for Water, you or your team can decide what your challenge looks like, then simply commit to that for 40 days.’
‘Angels of hope’: World Day of the Sick 2025
In his message to mark the 33rd World Day of the Sick on 11 February, Pope Francis reflected on this year’s theme ‘Hope does not disappoint’, taken from St Paul’s letter to the Romans. Catholics are being urged to reflect during this year’s World Day of the Sick on the ‘grace-filled encounters’ which can emerge at times of adversity.
Ceasefire enables 76 Caritas trucks to enter Gaza
In the two weeks following the ceasefire, 76 Caritas trucks crossed the border into Gaza carrying vital supplies. These goods—including food, bedding and shelter supplies—will support 12 relief distribution points, four offices and four warehouses in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis and Gaza City. Sally Thomas, Humanitarian Emergencies Manager at Caritas Australia, says they are ‘immensely proud’ of Caritas' partners in the region, but ‘cannot stress enough' the need for ongoing support.
‘We always saw God’s hand in everything, delivering us from the trouble and suffering ... We did not fear. The Lord was with us always.’
