The ocean of God’s mercy

In 1931, a Polish nun by the name of Faustina Kowalska began experiencing the presence of Jesus in an extraordinary way. Through a series of private revelations, St Faustina became the ‘secretary of God’s mercy’, listening to the Lord’s request that she make known to the world the infinite depths of his mercy. ‘I am Love and Mercy itself,’ Jesus told her.

One of the people transformed by this message of the Divine Mercy was Fr Chris Alar MIC, an American priest and Marian Father who recently toured Australia and New Zealand sharing his conversion story. He made some time to speak with us, sharing some of his experiences and describing how the Divine Mercy changed his life.

Also this week, we hear about how a number of parishes in Melbourne's east recently came together to make the feast of Pentecost a memorable one, how ACU’s Read to Learn program is helping disadvantaged school students, and what the feast of Corpus Christi means to some past and present seminarians.

As World Youth Day grows ever closer, we also explore what it means to be a pilgrim, and how the elements of a good story might help us to understand the nature of pilgrimage.

Communities come together to awaken a desire for the Holy Spirit
Recently a number of parishes and communities in Melbourne’s east worked together to host ‘Awaken’, where more than 350 people, of all ages, gathered to celebrate Pentecost by drawing closer to the transforming presence and power of God.
We must become bread broken for others
To celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, current and former students of Corpus Christi College Regional Seminary have begun reflecting on the meaning of the Eucharist in their lives. One priest shared how the words of a Polish monk helped inspire his understanding of the Eucharist: 'It is the most poetic description of the Eucharist that I have come across.’ The reflections form part of a seven-part series.
Read to Learn: making a difference in the lives of students
Sacred Heart—a vibrant and culturally diverse primary school in Fitzroy—has teamed up with nearby Australian Catholic University to implement Read to Learn, a program that provides a safe and fun learning environment where the children are supported by tutors each week to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.
The story of our lives: what it means to be a pilgrim
One of the things a good story does, other than entertain, is to take us on a journey of transformation, distilling the essential elements of life into a more structured experience. A pilgrimage does something similar in the life of a Christian.

‘Whatever your parish is, find ways to get involved, because there’s always a need and we’ve all got different gifts; there’s always something that we can do and contribute … The amazing thing with the Holy Spirit is that it’s God working through us.’
