The Church’s mission is distinguished by selfless love—the kind that doesn’t seek personal glory or reward but quietly, humbly seeks the good of others. Each of us is called to live out this mission through everyday acts of service.
In this week’s news, Sr Mary Sarah Galbraith OP delivered a wise and moving speech at the most recent Melbourne Catholic Professionals Luncheon, paying tribute to Catholic schools as communities of loving service and places of encounter with Christ.
Last Sunday, married couples from across the Archdiocese gathered at St Patrick's Cathedral to celebrate significant wedding anniversaries and to renew their vows. ‘Through your love for each other,’ Bishop Tony Ireland said in his homily, ‘you have become living witnesses to Christ’s self-giving love’, reminding us ‘that the mission of the Church is not only to distant lands; it is carried out in our homes, in our families and in our communities.’
Also this week, to mark World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis created 14 new saints, each of them an example of sacrificial love. ‘When we learn to serve,’ he said, ‘our every gesture of attention and care, every expression of tenderness, every work of mercy becomes a reflection of God’s love.’
