Selfless love

The Church’s mission is distinguished by selfless love—the kind that doesn’t seek personal glory or reward but quietly, humbly seeks the good of others. Each of us is called to live out this mission through everyday acts of service.

In this week’s news, Sr Mary Sarah Galbraith OP delivered a wise and moving speech at the most recent Melbourne Catholic Professionals Luncheon, paying tribute to Catholic schools as communities of loving service and places of encounter with Christ.

Last Sunday, married couples from across the Archdiocese gathered at St Patrick's Cathedral to celebrate significant wedding anniversaries and to renew their vows. ‘Through your love for each other,’ Bishop Tony Ireland said in his homily, ‘you have become living witnesses to Christ’s self-giving love’, reminding us ‘that the mission of the Church is not only to distant lands; it is carried out in our homes, in our families and in our communities.’

Also this week, to mark World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis created 14 new saints, each of them an example of sacrificial love. ‘When we learn to serve,’ he said, ‘our every gesture of attention and care, every expression of tenderness, every work of mercy becomes a reflection of God’s love.’

The community of God is bound together by the love of Christ—a love so strong that it cannot be broken or overcome, even by death.

In this week’s news, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli reflects on the ancient practice of praying for the faithful departed, reminding us that our prayers for the dead are an act of hope and a sign of our enduring communion with them.

During an eventful week in Rome, Pope Francis—in Dilexit nos, his new encyclical on the Sacred Heart of Jesus—encouraged the Church to put its trust in the saving love of Christ, and the Synod of Bishops concluded with the approval and release of its final document, as Pope Francis called the people of God to journey together with Christ, ‘behind him and alongside him’.

And we hear how the Catechism of the Good Shepherd, a beautiful, gentle ministry for children, is making space for small people across Melbourne to discover the love of Jesus and to have living encounters with the Living God.

‘Places of encounter’: Sr Mary Sarah Galbraith OP on the value of Catholic schools
Catholic schools offer something that no money can buy, guest speaker Sr Mary Sarah Galbraith OP told those gathered at the most recent Melbourne Catholic Professionals (MCP) luncheon at Zinc at Federation Square on Thursday 17 October, emphasising the important role Catholic schools can play as places of encounter with Christ and of deep spiritual formation. Sr Mary Sarah—local superior of the Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia and Principal of St Bernard’s Primary School in Bacchus Marsh—received a standing ovation for her inspiring speech on her personal journey as a religious sister and educator, and on the vital role Catholic schools play in shaping lives and communities.
A celebration of love: couples mark significant anniversaries at St Patrick’s Cathedral
On Sunday 22 October, 140 married couples from across the Archdiocese came together with their families at St Patrick’s Cathedral for the annual celebration of significant marriage anniversaries. In his homily, Bishop Tony Ireland recognised the ‘happy coincidence’ of the celebration taking place on the same day as World Mission Sunday, pointing out that both mission and marriage are vocations founded on the same Christian virtues of love, sacrifice and commitment.
‘God’s way of service’: Pope creates 14 new saints
Pope Francis called on the faithful to yearn to serve, not thirst for power, as he proclaimed 14 new saints on World Mission Sunday, including Canada-born founder of the Little Sisters of the Holy Family St Marie-Léonie Paradis, Italian missionary Giuseppe Allamano, founder of the Oblates of the Holy Spirit Sr Elena Guerra, and 11 men martyred in Syria in 1860.
Synod explores relationship between local and universal Church
Three weeks into the second session of the Synod of Bishops, several synod members have said it is too soon to tell what outcomes the synod members were moving towards. Members spent the sessions from 15 to 18 October discussing the ‘places’ where synodality is and can be experienced in the Church, including how papal primacy and the priorities of the universal Church might fit together with the priorities of local churches and bishops' conferences.
Br Andrew brings message of God’s love to Australia for World Mission Sunday
This year’s theme for World Mission Sunday (20 October) is ‘Go and invite everyone to the banquet,’ reflecting the inclusive nature of the Church’s mission of sharing God’s love. As part of its celebrations for World Mission Month, Catholic Mission has welcomed Br Andrew Tran Le Phuong SDB to Australia as a way of highlighting the life-changing work of missionaries around the globe.
Decree marks change in leadership for Missionary Sisters of Service
In a historic moment for the Missionary Sisters of Service (MSS), Archbishop of Melbourne Peter A Comensoli has issued a decree appointing Good Samaritan Sr Veronica Hoey SGS as the Canonical Delegate for the MSS for the next three years. This marks a new model of leadership and governance for the MSS as the community continues its journey towards completion as a congregation.
Prof Richard Colledge appointed Executive Dean, Theology and Philosophy at ACU
Professor Richard Colledge has been appointed Executive Dean of Theology and Philosophy at Australian Catholic University.
‘A Catholic school is a constant exchange of smiles and surprises, of disappointment and tears, celebration, growth and life lessons. It is the door by which many first encounter Christ and the door through which, please God, they will be prepared someday to meet the Father.’
Sr Mary Sarah Galbraith OP
reflecting on the question ‘What is a Catholic school?’
