The mystery of the cross

Holy Week is an invitation to walk the way of the cross with Jesus.

It is also an invitation to walk alongside others as together we look to the mystery of the cross, which unveils the true face of God—the God who loves us to the end.

Recognising that many in ‘Generation Alpha’ may go through Holy Week and Easter without grasping the true significance of the season, Fr Rob Galea speaks with us about ICON Ministry’s ground-breaking new Roblox video game, MetaSaint, which invites this generation to discover—perhaps for the first time—the beauty and wonder of Jesus Christ this Easter.

We also step into T Cavallaro & Sons Pasticceria, the beloved Footscray institution specialising in Sicilian cannoli, biscotti and celebration cakes. Tony Cavallaro shares his passion for carrying on his family’s legacy, and how, especially at Easter, they seek to offer their customers not just sweets but a sense of community and tradition, as well as the ‘peace and serenity’ of the Lamb of God.

Also this Holy Week, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli invites us to walk with Jesus and his companions in the way of the cross, and we explore the ways that ecumenical walks such the Way of the Cross in Melbourne’s CBD on Good Friday offer powerful opportunities for witness and encounter as we ‘carry the cross’ together. We look at some of the ways chaplains and pastoral care teams in hospitals, hospices and aged care homes are caring for patients and residents this Easter. We reflect on how God’s power is revealed not in saving himself from the cross, but by remaining in solidarity with us, his broken creation. And as we journey into Holy Week, we explore five films that can draw us deeper into the mysteries of sin, suffering, death and redemption.

Finally, on Monday we marked the anniversary of Caroline Chisholm’s death. We revisit a moment in 1846 when she found herself caught in the crossfire of a sectarian war of words. How she responded tells us a lot about how we too might resist the temptations of polarisation and distrust in our own age.

Into the metaverse: ICON Ministry to launch new game
ICON Ministry, founded and directed by Fr Rob Galea, is breaking new ground with their Roblox video game MetaSaint. Roblox is one of the world’s largest gaming platforms, predominantly used by Generation Alpha. Fr Rob tells us how he partnered with the world’s best game developers to create an experience that will help this new generation discover, perhaps for the first time, the truth of Jesus, inviting them to follow him and become saints—both in and out of the metaverse.
Stepping into the heart of the Cavallaro family
T Cavallaro & Sons Pasticceria has been creating and selling Sicilian cannoli, biscotti and cakes for the past 68 years. To step inside the small, bustling shop in Footscray is to step into the heart and soul of a family legacy that dates back to the late 19th century. It is a shop steeped in generations of Sicilian heritage. Tony Cavallaro shares what it means to be the ‘custodian’ of the special Sicilian recipes that have been passed down from his own grandfather to his parents, and which he is now passing onto his own children.
An invitation to walk with Jesus this Holy Week
As we journey through Holy Week and towards the Easter Triduum, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli invites us to walk alongside Jesus by praying the Way of the Cross, a timeless devotion that we can pray on our own or with our family or fellow parishioners.
A powerful witness: walking together in the way of the cross
For the past 24 years, Christians of all ages, backgrounds and traditions have been gathering on Good Friday morning to walk together through Melbourne’s CBD, following the cross, praying, singing and joining with their brothers and sisters in Christ in a remarkable act of Christian witness and encounter. We look at some of the ways that the annual Way of the Cross—and the smaller ecumenical walks that take place throughout Melbourne's suburbs—can strengthen bonds of Christian unity as we ‘keep carrying the cross’ together.
An invitation to prayer: caring for the hospital-bound this Easter
Holy Week and Easter are the busiest time of the year for parish priests and liturgy teams preparing to welcome people to their Easter Triduum services. Not everyone can make it to their local parish, though, with many in hospitals, hospices or aged care homes unable to attend the liturgies in person. Providing spiritual care and support for patients, residents and their families is something that chaplains and pastoral care teams are particularly mindful of during the Holy Week and Easter period, as they share with us here.
The true reward for holiness
This Holy Week, Fr Jerome Santamaria reflects on the true reward for holiness—something that the reality of evil can never understand—namely, the reconciliation of sinners with God.
5 films for Holy Week (other than The Passion)
Jeremy Ambrose, Campus Pastoral Associate for Staff at ACU Melbourne and organiser of the Melbourne Catholic Cinephiles, talks about five films to deepen and enrich our Holy Week experience, films that take us on a journey of struggle, brokenness and, ultimately, redemption.
Caught in the crossfire: the example of Caroline Chisholm in a polarised age
In 1846, as she was preparing to sail back to England to promote her scheme for assisting immigrants to the Australian colonies, Caroline Chisholm found herself caught in the crossfire of a sectarian war of words between a fiery Protestant clergyman and a pugnacious Catholic newspaper editor. How she responded tells us a lot, not just about her own history and character, but about how we too might respond to the temptations of polarisation and distrust in our own age.
‘Easter is the time to talk to them about Jesus. We have the luxury of being in our churches and hearing about Jesus, but these kids will go through all of Easter not even knowing it is Easter.’
