A broader vision

Advent is a time of waiting and hopeful anticipation. As we count down the days to the coming of the Christ child, we are invited to widen our vision, orienting ourselves to the future kingdom of God—a future that, miraculously, we already inhabit through the transformative power of hope in Christ.

In his latest video message, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli calls us to embrace this broader vision, reminding us that Advent is a time of preparation and joyful expectation, pushing us forward towards ‘the gift of our eternal life in God’.

As we prepare ourselves for the greatest gift of all in Jesus Christ, and consider how our lives might better reflect the great mercy and generosity of our Saviour, we look at seven practical ways to give hope and make a difference in our world this Advent.

And as the Victorian Parliament gets ready to debate changes to anti-vilification laws in the new year, Archbishop Comensoli welcomes the government’s clarification on religious protections, promising to watch progress of the legislation closely.

Archbishop Comensoli: Advent, a time of preparation and expectation
As we enter into the season of Advent once again, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli reflects on Advent as a time of joyful preparation and expectation. ‘Advent pushes us forward, asks us to be awake and attentive,’ he says, and to come ‘with real joy’ to the time of Jesus’ incarnation.
Giving hope: 7 ways to make a difference this Advent and Christmas
As we prepare this Advent to make room for Emmanuel, God with us, there are many ways we can help to make a difference in the lives of those in our communities and around the world who are struggling. We take a look at seven ways to spread joy and hope this Christmas, from supporting the education of a child in Zimbabwe and providing clean water to communities in Myanmar, to putting warm coats on the backs of those sleeping on our streets, delivering hampers to aged-care residents and helping struggling families weather the cost-of-living crisis.
Archbishop welcomes clarification on religious protections under proposed Victorian anti-vilification laws
Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne Peter A Comensoli has welcomed the Victorian Government’s clarification of intent that Victorians sharing their faith will continue to be protected under new laws introduced to parliament this week but will watch progress of the legislation closely. Efforts to lower the threshold for vilification offences, the Archbishop said, ‘must not stifle genuine discussion and acts done in good faith, particularly the sharing of religious beliefs by people of faith.’
New social enterprise a community effort
Today is International Day of People with Disability. This year’s theme is ‘Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.’ To mark the day, VMCH, in partnership with Whitehorse City Council, has unveiled ‘Where Is My Coffee?' Nunawading at the Nunawading Community Hub. This new cafe will give people with disability the opportunity to acquire essential job skills training and a chance to join the paid workforce.
Ceasefire, dialogue are the only paths to peace, Pope says
Pope Francis praised a new ceasefire reached in Lebanon, prayed for Israeli hostages and Palestinians in Gaza, and appealed to world leaders to help put an end to the war in Ukraine. After praying the Angelus with visitors in St Peter’s Square on 1 December, the Pope highlighted the devastating conflicts underway in the Middle East and Ukraine, encouraging all people to pray and work for peace.
‘I want to encourage you ... to look forward, not only to our commemoration of the birth of our Saviour, but also to the gift that his incarnation has already given to us, the gift of our eternal life in God. Advent pushes us forward, asks us to be awake and attentive, and—with expectation, and therefore with real joy—to come to the time of our Lord’s incarnation.’
