Houseperson/cleaner – Newman Residential College

  • Casual opportunity (up to 22 hours a week).

We are seeking self-motivated individual with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to providing great service to join our Housekeeping team. This role is responsible for all the general cleaning within the common areas of the College which includes student houses, kitchen, dining room, chapels, student common rooms (2), reading room, billiards room, coffee lounge, walkways, cloisters, terraces and male toilets in common areas.

Newman College is a co-educational residential College affiliated with the University of Melbourne. Accommodating undergraduate and graduate students from metropolitan and regional Victoria, interstate and overseas (approximately 280).

The College's fundamental purpose is to foster the intellectual, ethical and spiritual life of its members, to enable them to become effective leaders in the community, mature in faith and committed to justice.

Key Responsibilities of the role (please refer to attached Position Description for full list)

  • Collecting the rubbish from all the common area bins around the College.
  • Washing, rinsing and deodorising the large blue general waste bin.
  • Clearing cobwebs, outdoor furniture and sweeping and mopping outdoor areas.
  • Polishing the floors in the dining room, Chapel, coffee lounge
  • Moping or vacuuming stairs.
  • Moving furniture for luncheons, conferences and events.
  • Moving furniture to and from student rooms, when required.

About you

  • Must have work rights in Australia.
  • Be self-motivated and be able to work unsupervised.
  • Be flexible and available for work across a 5-day roster.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of basic hygiene requirements and safe working procedures.
  • Be committed to providing extraordinary service.
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in cleaning or in a hospitality establishment is highly desirable.
