This weekend is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Sunday, which marks the beginning of NAIDOC Week and is an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A variety of resources have been prepared for use by parishes and schools throughout the month of July. For those unable to attend their local parish this Sunday, the 11am Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral will be livestreamed and broadcast live to C31. Archbishop Peter A Comensoli will be joined by Sherry Balcombe and others from Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Victoria in specially marking ATSI Sunday.

Also this week we hear from Katrina Mynard, who is part of the team that signs the Sunday morning Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral for the wider Deaf community watching online or on TV. Katrina is Deaf, and Deaf interpreters signing for the Deaf community is not as common as one would think. 'The hearing interpreter wants to convey the English into Auslan and then I want to convey it in a way that is Deaf-friendly and engaging,' Katrina says. 'A hearing person doesn’t have that lived experience to put into that space ... The Archdiocese should be really, really proud that they were so progressive and offered us an opportunity to bring in Deaf interpreters.
