Looking beyond ourselves

Sometimes, when life gets busy, it can be easy to narrow our focus, prioritising our own agendas as we concentrate on just getting through the day. But Jesus calls us to look up and outward. He invites us to look beyond ourselves.

In this week’s stories, we meet Fr Karmel Borg and hear how—through his 64 years of priestly ministry—he has kept his eyes on the needs of those he serves. From driving a school bus to hearing confession, he has dedicated his life to ‘looking after his kids’.

Sinitta McCarthy and Leah Freeman, school captains at the Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy, were moved by the images of war and suffering flashing up on their television screens. As VCE students, living far from the conflict zones, they weren’t sure what they could do, but doing nothing didn't seem like an option. Rounding up fellow students and the broader school community, they organised and hosted ‘Perform for Peace’, raising $3,000 for Caritas Australia.

And Kate Moriarty takes inspiration from Sts Martha, Mary and Lazarus to reflect on what hospitality might look like when we take the focus off ourselves and embrace the mess.

Don’t forget to take a look at our new job listings section, in which we share opportunities to come work with us.

‘A father looks after his kids’: Fr Karmel Borg’s 64 years as a priest
Reflecting on his many years in priestly ministry, retired priest Fr Karmel Borg says, ‘It was a great gift from God to me.’ Born in Malta, one of 12 kids, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1960. Since then, he has supported the needs of God’s people in many parishes across the Archdiocese, including St Peter Chanel in Deer Park, where he served for 36 years. He says, ‘Everyone is my child, as a priest, especially those in the parish.’
Performing for peace: students raise awareness and $3,000 for Caritas
On Thursday 18 July, students from the Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy hosted the ‘Perform for Peace’ concert and fundraiser, raising $3,000 for Caritas Australia and demonstrating that each of us is capable of making a difference, no matter how overwhelming a problem might seem. It all began when college captains Sinitta McCarthy and Leah Freeman began noticing 'a lot of things on the news—a lot of victims of war and people who are struggling right now'—and decided that doing something to help was better than doing nothing.
Home is where the mess is
Yesterday we celebrated the feast of Sts Mary, Martha and Lazarus, a family with whom Kate Moriarty can relate. ‘There is a version of me. She is an incredible host’ she writes. ‘She laughs this musical laugh and says, “Come back to mine!” And there’s something baking in her oven. There’s always something baking. Something with cinnamon. And the house, the house is immaculate ... I’m waiting to become this version of myself. When it happens, I’ll invite people inside my house. I will invite them so hard. It’s bound to happen some day.’

‘A lot of people need to be loved. They walk through life, and they seem to never have had the good fortune to find someone who feels they are worthwhile. They call us “Father”. A father looks after his kids.’
