Pastoral Youth Worker, Parish of St Macartan’s


Our Catholic worshipping communities across the Peninsular are integral to us living our faith. As such we need to be connected to every generation and one that needs immediate attention and connectivity, is the youth and young adults of our Parish between the ages of 13 – 25-year-olds. The purpose of the Pastoral Youth Worker is to encourage youth to gather in a safe Christian environment, in formal and informal ways. Exploring social and spiritual relationships, encouraging friendships, Parish, and community connectiveness, and potentially growing new youth leaders. This is a full time position - 20+ hours per week [20hrs Mornington and 5hrs+ at another Parish TBC]. Weekend work and some evening work is essential.

Key Accountabilities

  • To develop parent and peer led Youth ministries across the St Macartan’s Parish and potentially other parishes on the peninsular. Providing young people the opportunity to socialise, deepen their faith and put it into practice in practical ways.
  • To coordinate the fortnightly Sunday 5pm parish youth Mass, with emphasis on encouraging full participation in the liturgy, with readers, musicians, singers etc. The youth Mass is not just another congregational Mass but a forum for the youth to explore and showcase their spirituality.
  • To coordinate Youth club gatherings; with activity and events to bring fun, friendship, 2nd spiritual awareness to the youth. Historically this has included a fortnightly Friday evening junior youth club 12-16yr old but with a need for an older Youth “gathering”, 17yr old – 25yr old, possibly Sunday evenings – every fortnight.
  • Work with parents and create other leaders, developing programs to serve the spiritual, social, and development needs of the youth of the Parish.
  • Maintained social media presence to increase youth participation, notifying youth of various ministry events via parish Instagram and sharing videos, posts and teachings about their Catholic Faith and keeping youth engaged in the life of the Church.
  • Build lasting relationships with youth and parents or guardians through the youth groups.
  • Oversee administration and management of all areas of youth ministry across the Parishes.
  • Lead praise and worship music, both online via the Parish YouTube channel and in person live with the youth. Aiming to introduce them to the person of Jesus Christ and building within them a desire to establish a relationship with Him and the Church He founded.
  • Connect the Padua College youth into the Parish youth ministries.
  • Liaise with the Primary school offering support for any bridging opportunities between school and Parish.
  • Assist youth in catechesis, evangelisation, fellowship, and service opportunities. Encourage youth to fundraise to support their own youth club needs.
  • Contribute to the Parish Bulletin and Parish meetings as required.
  • Other duties as directed by the Parish Priest.

Required Skills:

  • Experience in Youth Work/Youth Ministry
  • The ability to work cooperatively with the group.
  • A capacity to facilitate ministry initiatives using the skills of Parishioners.
  • A capacity to work effectively with volunteers across various Parish ministries and other Parishes.
  • Experience in Parish Ministry. Working closely with the Parish Priest on a common vision for youth ministry.
  • Effective interpersonal, group facilitation, and network skills.

Other Requirements

  • A practising and committed Catholic
  • A current driver licence
  • Choir leader, singing or musical ability (desirable)
  • Must hold a current Victorian Working with Children Check (employee) or Victorian Institute of Teaching registration.
  • Must apply for a National Police Check or provide a recent Police Check (no more than 3 months old).
  • Must be able to provide a certificate confirming double COVID vaccination status and maintain COVID vaccination boosters as required.
